COP28 should seek total fossil fuel 'phaseout': UN chief

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urges the COP28 climate conference to aim for a complete phaseout of fossil fuels, emphasizing the need for a reduction in fossil fuel consumption to prevent a total disaster. Guterres stresses the importance of a clear and noncommittal phase-out instead of a vague phase-down. He calls for a credible time framework aligned with the objective of limiting the temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Guterres also highlights the need to triple global renewable energy production and address climate justice issues at COP28.
