Melting glaciers endanger mountain villages in Pakistan

Melting glaciers caused by global warming pose a threat to the vulnerable villages in Pakistan's mountainous north. The future of these villages is at risk due to the formation of unstable lakes as a result of melting glacier ice. Glacial lakes that overfill or have unsound banks can burst, causing deadly floods that devastate the surrounding areas. The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) predicts that Himalayan glaciers could lose up to 75% of their ice by the end of the century.
