In Colombia, illegally felled timber repurposed to help bees

In northeast Colombia, confiscated timber is being transformed into bee hives to address the serious problem of bee extinction. The project has already created 1,000 bee hives and plans to build another 10,000. Beekeeper Maria Acevedo, a beneficiary of the project, has lost more than half of her hives due to pesticides. Laboratory tests found traces of the insecticide fipronil in dead bees. Climate change, including higher temperatures and reduced nectar-bearing flowers, also threatens bee populations.
